America's Best Fall Bike Rides

US News & World Report just published an article in their Travel section listing Asheville as one of six locations for the best fall bike riding in the country. You can read the article here.

November 1st
Asheville on Bikes Pumpkin Peddler
October means only one thing to hundreds of Ashevillians: the return of the Pumpkin Pedaller, a much-loved, much-anticipated annual event organized by Asheville on Bikes. High-spirited, costumed cyclists will ride this year’s 10-mile route on Saturday, November 1st, beginning at Asheville City Hall and culminating at The Wedge Brewery.

November 1st
Bookwalter Binge Grand Fondo

The BB Charity Gran Fondo is a bike ride located in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Cyclists will ride a challenging 83, 30 or 6.7 mile course. Participants will be able to enjoy the colorful fall foliage and have a chance to experience the hospitality and charm of Black Mountain and Asheville. Participants will also be able to ride and converse with past, present, and future cycling celebrities, who will join the ride as guides and guests.

ALL Proceeds will go towards Trips for Kids WNC.

November 1st
The Couch Potato

The Couch Potato is epic mountain biking with a short enough course to make it doable from "off the couch".   Rolling over rugged mining roads, classic Pisgah single track, cursing climbs and giggling descents, this course will test your skills and desire as you explore the intoxicating terrain of the Pisgah National Forest.  Burgers, brews and a camp fire will be at the finish to comfort you after a long day in the saddle.

New for 2014 – Timed Enduro Section!!! We’ll be timing your descent on Daniel Ridge Trail! This will allow for a safety accountability of riders mid course and showcase the true descenders in the endurance world.  The timer at the start at the top of Daniel Ridge at FS 225 connector will have a hand held chip reading device and the bottom timer will have a small structure in place with a chip reading device attached to a laptop computer.  Riders will not need to slow as they enter or exit either timing area but can continue to ride normally along the route.  The “enduro” section will be included with registration fees and applicable for all participants in the event. We’ll be handing out Enduro awards too!

November 2nd
Sycamore Cycles Swank 65
Sample some of Pisgah’s best trails in this great season closer – including the famed Farlow Gap!

The Swank 65 Mountain Bike Journey is mountain bike racing at its most primeval, far removed from civilization and polluted air. The race begins at 2500 feet, and consists of a triad of cloverleaf shaped loops winding around Gloucester Gap in Pisgah National Forest.  Rolling over rugged mining roads, fun single track, tough climbs and hell-raising descents, the exhilarating course will test your skills and desire as you explore the devilish terrain of the Pisgah National Forest.

New for 2014 –

This will allow for a safety accountability of riders mid course and showcase the true descenders in the endurance world.  The timer at the start at the top of Farlow Gap will have a hand held chip reading device and the bottom timer about 1/4 mile before the rest stop will have a small structure in place with a chip reading device attached to a laptop computer.  Riders will not need to slow as they enter or exit either timing area but can continue to ride normally along the route.  The “enduro” section will be included with registration fees and applicable for all participants in the event. We’ll be handing out Enduro awards too!
