CRAGGY GARDENS Blue Ridge Parkway officials have banned pedestrians and bicyclists from the area around a slide below the roadway just south of Craggy Gardens Visitors Center. A statement from the parkway says concern about the stability of the roadway in the area where a retaining wall below it collapsed has increased and implies that the road will probably be closed for most or all of this year, although final decisions about repairs have not been made. The road has been closed to vehicles since the problem happened late last year. "The road section above the failure has become unstable and is not safe for travel," said Superintendent Phil Francis. The announcement says the visitor center will be closed for the year and "it is likely that access to Mt. Mitchell State Park for 2008 will continue to be from the north only." The Craggy slide blocks access to the park from the south.
