Being a father of three and an avid road cyclist I have tried to include my kids in my hobby. It has been difficult to find anything for kids in the cycling sport, aside from the el-cheapo Walt-Mart bikes. I have compiled this list from my many months of research.

Kids Road Bicycles

The following bicycles are all 24" models meaning the wheel size is 24". The next step up would be a bike with 650c wheels, then 700c.

Kid Friendly Components

Water bottle cages can be an issue with small or oddly shaped frames. Most kids bikes only have mounts for one cage and a standard size water bottle may not come out easily. Here's a solution, a side entry cage. The bottle comes in/out from the side instead of the top. The cages are available in aluminum or carbon fiber.

Nashbar Sidewinder Cage

Side Entry Water Bottle Cage designed where there is not enough room to pull a bottle out the top of a cage.

Available at Bike Nashbar
MSRP Aluminum $7.99 Sale $3.99

Bontrager Satellite Cage

Side Entry Water Bottle Cage

Available at Bontrager
MSRP Aluminum $9.99, Carbon $49.99

Kid Friendly Pedals

I wanted to start my kids out pedaling the right way. If they used the clip on pedals that came with their road bike they would develop poor pedaling technique. They would tire more quickly due to the cushioning effect of tennis shoes versus cycling shoes. The pedals need to be relatively small. You don't want a pedal larger than their shoes! I chose Speedplay pedals for my kids. They are physically small in size and you can clip-in on either side, unlike pedals such as Look that can only be accessed from one side. Other pedals may work just as well, this is my preference.

Kids Cycling Clothing

Kids size cycling clothing is very hard to find. Designs and colors are very limited but there are a few manufacturers listed below.

Bike Computers & Heart Rate Monitors

Kids want the cool bike computer just as much as dad. You only need the basics which any brand will provide. Speed and distance are the main functions. Make sure the computer has a trip odometer that can be easily reset before each ride. My kids see dad wearing a heart rate monitor and they want one too. Dad had a heart condition so he will always train with a heart monitor, sorry no power tap in the near future. Standard adult heart monitor straps won't fit a small diameter chest. Even a XS size may still be to large. I found this heart monitor strap from Polar Fitness. It has a flexible strap that will fit any size chest.
